Racing where the ground is the story

Most racecourses treat rain as an interruption. Pune builds a season around it. From July to October the meetings here run in the middle of the monsoon, on turf that spends the season somewhere between good and genuinely holding, and that single fact reorders everything a form guide would otherwise tell you.

Why soft ground rewrites the form book

Soft going asks a physically different question. A horse has to pull its feet out of the ground rather than skim over the top of it, which suits a particular action and punishes another. Some horses handle it comfortably and some are simply not the same animal once the ground eases.

He left it alone. It went off prominently, held its place for half the trip, and then did what horses with that action tend to do once the ground turns against them. What actually happens when the going shifts mid-card

Run that afternoon back slowly, because the mechanic inside it is most of what separates Pune from every other Indian meeting. The club posts a going description in the morning. The messages that are not from us
