A hundred years of the same argument

Most sporting rivalries are about recent history. The Kolkata derby is about inheritance. Mohun Bagan was founded in 1889, East Bengal in 1920, and the two have been meeting since 1925 — long enough that supporters are on their fourth or fifth generation of the same allegiance, decided at birth rather than chosen.

Why the form guide matters less here

In an ordinary league fixture, recent results tell you most of what you need. In this one they tell you less than usual. Both clubs have had long stretches in the wilderness and neither has ever seen attendance fall away because of it, because the people in the ground are not there on the strength of last month's results.

Practically, that shows up as a match played at higher intensity and lower composure than either side's league form suggests — more cards, more scrappy phases, more games settled by an error rather than a plan. Eden Gardens is not a neutral venue

Kolkata's cricket ground is one of the oldest in the world and it behaves like a home advantage in a way most grounds do not. A full house at Eden is genuinely loud enough to change how a match feels from the middle, and totals set here have a habit of standing up rather than being chased down comfortably.

Racing since 1847

The Royal Calcutta Turf Club has been running meetings on the Maidan since 1847, which makes it older than most of the sports anyone in the city follows. It holds a monsoon season and a winter one, deliberately staggered against the western and southern clubs so that Indian racing keeps going through the year instead of bunching into a few months.

It is worth planning around rather than pushing through. One derby Sunday, from a flat in Behala

Arnab's building drops power for about ninety seconds every time the load shifts on the line, and it chose to do that at nineteen minutes past five, four minutes into the second half. Eight people in a first-floor flat off Diamond Harbour Road, one ceiling fan, a plate of jhalmuri going soft on the table, and the television suddenly black in the middle of a derby. Two of his cousins had their phones out before the inverter caught up. That is not really a story about a power cut. It is the reason half this city follows the second half on a handset even when the television is behaving — the phone never goes dark, and the phone is where the price lives.

He had ₹400 on the match, struck before kick-off at a number he thought was generous. By the time the tube light flickered back the shape of the game had changed completely. His side was down to ten men. On a television that is a groan and an argument. On a phone it is a figure moving in front of you in real time while a cousin reads the new price aloud and asks, loudly, whether you are getting out. That is the honest texture of a derby afternoon here. It is social, it is noisy, and the decision is never entirely yours, because there are always four other people in the room with a firm view.

What actually happens when you take a price mid-match

Follow the mechanic through as it ran for him. The red card goes in around the hour. Within a couple of seconds the in-play market suspends — nothing can be struck while the feed and the pricing catch up with what just happened, and that pause protects you as much as it protects the book. The market reopens repriced across the board: match odds shifted hard, the goals line lower, the cards market shorter than it was ten seconds earlier. His original bet is untouched by any of it. Getting home is part of the evening

Nobody writes about the journey back. A derby at Salt Lake empties a very large crowd onto roads that were already slow, and the metro afterwards is a crush from platform to gate. If you have been to the ground rather than watching from a flat, you are making decisions one-handed on a phone while being carried along by other people, which is a poor state for anything involving arithmetic. Kolkata weather does not help. A heavy shower turns the walk out of Sector V into a shuffle and flattens a battery on the way.

The useful habit is a dull one. Decide before you leave the house what the evening is allowed to cost, and use the account's own controls to hold yourself to it rather than relying on judgement later. A cap set on a calm Saturday morning is a far better accountant than you are at half past nine at night on a stationary bus near Ultadanga. If you have not opened an account yet

Registration is short enough to finish before the teams come out. You give a mobile number, an OTP arrives on it, and you choose a password at that point. The messages that are not from us

Football groups in this city run to hundreds of members, and groups that size attract people who are not there for the football. Two patterns surface around every derby. The first is a man offering to top up your account on your behalf: send him, say, ₹2,000 on his personal UPI handle and he will credit rather more than that, because he claims to be an agent working on some wholesale rate. No such arrangement exists. Money paid into an individual's UPI handle has left your control completely, and there is no ledger anywhere that ties it back to your balance.

The second arrives as a call or a message from somebody presenting themselves as support, very often while a withdrawal is pending, asking you to read out an OTP or confirm your password so they can release it. Nobody working on the platform will ever ask for either. The OTP is the thing that proves you are you; reading it out hands the account to whoever is listening. Genuine help in Bengali or Hindi is reached from inside the app or from the contact page, and a real agent has no reason to hear a password spoken aloud.

The tell is identical in both cases: urgency, plus a payment or a credential moving outside the app. A balance only ever changes through the deposit and withdrawal screens inside your own account. If a message leaves you feeling you have to act within the next two minutes, that pressure is the entire product being sold, and the correct response is to close the chat and check the account yourself.
