When a venue's own history stops being useful

Venue statistics feel like the safest research you can do. They are specific, they are numerous, and they describe the exact place the match is being played. The problem is that they assume the place has stayed the same, and grounds do not always oblige.

Naresh works in an office block off the Madhapur side of the ring road and is usually home in Habsiguda by about half past seven. The innings finished short. Not narrowly short either, but comfortably, unarguably short, in a way that made the whole afternoon of reading feel like it had been about some other match entirely. He was irritated for a day. Then a friend of his father's, who has been walking into that ground since long before the Sunrisers existed, said the thing that actually explained it: the square had been worked on, and the seasons Naresh had averaged together were not all describing the same pitch.
